AI is a window to Infinity. Don't look too long.

I read about AI-induced psychosis lately, and it doesn't surprise me that this kind of mental break is happening.

This technology - although human-made - functions on the same principles of nature as everything else in the universe. And it's giving us a daily window - on our personal smarphones - into the bewildering, mind-cracking nature of infinity.

One of the things that makes me dizzy about AI is the exponential creation of fictional, artistic worlds.

It used to be that teams of artists, film-makers, animators, writers, video-game designers would take a year or two to create a new film or game or animation.

But now in a very short period of time, AI has produced millions (probably billions) of new fictional worlds.

Montages of characters from fictional worlds are very popular on instagram and tiktok — search "dark fantasy," or "cyber punk" or "sci-fi anime" and you'll find world after world after world flashing before your eyes.

It feels like every character has a story, a life, a destiny that is compelling and rich — and there are tens of thousands of them being produced every day. And no one will ever be able to keep up with all of them.

When I open my phone it's like I'm suddenly on a low-level psychedelic journey, channel-switching through an infinite multiverse.

It's dizzying. And that's my point.

This dizziness, disorientation, and slight feeling of panic we might get as we look through the chain reaction of AI world-creation is giving us a small taste of infinity.

We start to realize that there is no bottom to creativity. There is no end to the number of stories we can tell or worlds that can be imagined.

And on the one hand, yes, all of this is made-up. None of it is real.

But when I see one of those long-exposure deep-space images with countless galaxies (not stars, galaxies) strewn throughout the darkness of space, I'm reminded of just how mind-breakingly vast our single universe is.

And are there multiple universes? Why couldn't there be?

Suddenly, the infinity that AI is simulating on our social media feeds suddenly feels very real. Not because the actual stories, characters, images are real, but because the infinity that underlies them is real.

All of this reminds me of psychedelic experience. And I think that learning to navigate psychedelic journeys with ease and zen may be very similar to what we'll need to navigate the future that is emerging in front of our eyes.

Part of the work I do is helping people integrate intense spiritual and non-ordinary states of consciousness. And I suspect that AI-induced psychosis, and spiritual experiences, are going to be a contributing factor to increase in mental breakdowns & breakthroughs that psychedelics, meditation, breathwork, and other altered-state practices are already contributing to.

With all that said, put down your phone and go touch some dirt.

Grounding is important.

And if you need help flowing through these weird times, reach out.
