Stabalizing Your Awakening

You've Had an Awakening. Now What?

......

Awakening in the Modern World

There is a consciousness bloom happening across the world. Today, people are experiencing awakenings around the world, either through spiritual practice, psychedelics, or purely by accident.

The internet has allowed spiritual practices and ideas to disseminate widely and freely around the world.  The popularity of psychedelics and plant medicines is another catalyst, as was the widespread introspection imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Unfortunately, many people are experiencing rapid transformations of consciousness without context, guidance, or community, leaving them feeling confused, isolated, or destabilized.

Psychologists for the most part don't understand spiritual awakening, and most mainstream religions don't provide much guidance about this phenomenon. Although certain New Age spiritual communities may recognize awakening, most lack reliable resources and guidance for those going through one.

Buddhism is one of the traditions that most explicitly deals with non-duality. However, not everyone connects with Buddhist teachings and many would prefer a culturally Western approach to non-duality.

My goal is to offer guidance and community for those who've experienced an awakening to non-duality in the modern world.

I came to awakening from a psychologically-minded and secular worldview. This continues to influence the way I talk about and approach awakening. However, differences in worldview seem to collapse when we drop into non-duality, and so I regularly work with people who come from different religious and non-religious backgrounds.

There are many paths to the mountaintop, but the view at the top seems to be the same.

What does it mean to "stabilize" your awakening?

Awakening isn’t the end of the journey. It’s only the beginning. After an initial awakening, the next step is to stabilize your awakening.

After we have a "first taste," we continue to deepen this consciousness by:

1) Stabilizing our awakening so we can abide in / act from non-dual consciousness in our lives

2) Clearing old programming that hook us out of non-dual consciousness and back into ego-identification (unresolved wounds, deep-seated beliefs, fear, anger, shame, etc.)

What happens afterwards?

Awakening isn’t the end of the journey. It’s only the beginning. After an initial awakening, the spiritual work continues, but from a different perspective.

After we have a first taste, we continue to deepen this consciousness by:

1) Accessing and acting directly from this consciousness

2) Clearing old programming that hook us out of non-dual consciousness and back into ego-identification (unresolved wounds, deep-seated beliefs, fear, anger, shame, etc.)

Who is this for?

1) Seekers who have never experienced awakening, but sense that there is “something more”

2) Those who have had an awakening, but “lost” it, or can’t access it again.

3) Those who are struggling to navigate life after an awakening.

Who is this *not* for?

Spiritual awakenings can be destabilizing experience for some. A rapid or intense dissolution of ego may take place that can lead to derealization, meaninglessness or sudden loss of purpose, and ontological shock.

These sessions are not for:

1) Anyone in the midst of psychosis or a serious mental illness.

2) Anyone with active suicidal or homicidal ideation.

3) Anyone without a stable support network of friends, family, and financial and housing stability.

Awakening to non-duality can lead to a rapid resolution of many inner conflicts through a dissolution of the ego. Paradoxically, it should only be attempted after cultivating sufficient ego-strength.

Continuing the work

After awakening, there is often a great outpouring or tears, laughter, or both. It may come with an explosion of universal love, or an unshakable sense of relief, safety, and true freedom.

However, in the days and weeks afterwards, the ego may start to re-assert itself. There is often a period of “I’ve got it!” … “I’ve lost it.” in which we swing from awakened consciousness to regular egoic consciousness. This a natural part of the process. What follows is the work of stabilization in which we work to untangle the remainder of our conditioning and attachments and come to live a greater and greater percentage of the time in non-dual consciousness.

For some, the awakening session is all they need. For those who’d like to continue working with me from an initial awakening toward stable awakening, we’ll discuss what that could look like at the end of our session.
